Sumitra Shiral – Organised 3,000 women into Self Help Groups

In Swayam Shikshan Prayog, Sumitra Shiral is known for setting up 10 Self-Help Groups within a short period of 1 month. Through the Self-Help Groups she motivated women to start their businesses and helped them get access to capital.


She realised that women were facing problems in repayment of loans due to health emergencies. She then provided training to women on health, hygiene and preventive care to reduce their expenses on health.

Sumitra Shiral is a master at seeding and strengthening grassroots business ventures, working in the drought-affected areas of Osmanabad. Sumitra has organised 3,000 women into Self Help Groups. Owner of two businesses and the Manjiri Sakhi Producer Company, she has also mentored 2,000 women entrepreneurs, of which 700 are running successful businesses with annual income increases of more than 40 percent.


She says “I was not willing to give up in the face of a challenge. I decided to rise up and face it. As my life has changed, I want to change the lives of other women by sharing my knowledge I got from Swayam Shikshan Prayog and help other women and giving them knowledge and linkage to develop their businesses and making them independent.”
