In 22 years, Ms. Prema Gopalan has helped over 5 lakh women become organic farmers, mentors. These women were stuck in the daily rigmarole of managing the kitchen, kids and the household. But now they are emerging as faces of a widespread change.
Sakhi Task Force helps communities deal with the COVID-19 crisis
- A glimpse into our efforts to help rural communities deal with the COVID-19 crisis.
- Grassroots women are the real power in the COVID-19 crisis. SSP is working as a bridging force in collaboration with the government to reduce the impact of the crisis in Bihar, Maharashtra and Kerala.
- We are providing awareness on hygiene, social distancing and preparedness.
Impact
- 4 States – Maharashtra, Bihar, Kerala and Odisha
- 5,000 grassroots women taking the lead as members of Sakhi Task Force
- 10 lakhs people educated on COVID-19 safety measures and practices
- 35,000 needy families received essential groceries, vegetables and hygiene kits
- Distributed 3 lakhs soaps, 1 lakh masks & 15,000 sanitary napkins to needy people
- Assisted in MNREGA & over 4,000 persons secured jobs
- 80,000 farmers trained online on climate resilient agriculture for cultivation of food crops
- Ensured vegetable gardens for 4,300 families
Impact of COVID-19 on Rural Communities
- The lockdown has hit agriculture during harvesting season. #SocialDistancing for agriculture means that agriculture labourers have no work during the peak harvesting season. Farmers are reeling under the pressures of the harvest while labourers have no work and no income.
- Micro-enterprises and small businesses are facing closure. There are no income alternatives. #WorkFromHome is not an option for rural communities.
- Rumours and misinformation are causing fear amongst people.
