Women farmers in Chinchpur village of Sillod block, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, Maharashtra, are building more climate-resilient livelihoods with support from Swayam Shikshan Prayog.
Nikita Janjal began by experimenting with mixed cropping on her own farm, demonstrating how farmers can grow multiple crops, reduce risks, and improve soil health. As neighbouring farmers saw the results, more women began participating in discussions and trainings.
She also encouraged farmers to adopt vermicomposting as a sustainable way to produce organic fertiliser and generate additional income. Two farmers started with 25 vermicompost beds, producing vermicompost and vermi culture. They sold 90 kg of vermi culture at βΉ250 per kg and produced nearly 35 tonnes of vermicompost, inspiring ten more farmers to start the practice.
Nikita is also promoting the use of organic inputs such as neem extract, Dashparni and Jeevamrut, along with water conservation structures like stone periphery (an extended Jaltara system) and well recharge.
Today, women in Chinchpur are stepping forward with greater confidence β attending trainings, engaging with the Gram Panchayat, and actively participating in farming decisions.
