Sangeeta Dhoramare lives with her husband and daughter. After marriage, she became part of a large joint family. Even though they had 7 acres of land, only 2 acres were used for growing food. As their financial condition was bad, they worked as laborers on others’ farms. There was no steady income, and things seemed stuck for years.
When Swayam Shikshan Prayog started working in the village, Sangeeta was keen to join the training programme on agri and agri business. She learned about climate resilient farming, running small businesses, customer behavior, branding, and keeping records. This training boosted her confidence and she planned to start a small business.
She took a loan of โน5,000 from her self-help group and bought a sewing machine. She started stitching blouses and traditional dresses and soon repaid the loan. She didnโt stop there. With another small loan, she started a flour mill and expanded to papad and vermicelli making, followed by dairy and spice production. Step by step, Sangeeta built five small businesses. She learned how to manage time, keep up quality, and repay loans on time.
Today, her family has a steady income. From living in a tin-roofed house, they now have a pucca house worth โน13 lakhs. She also gives summer job to two women and encourages others in the village to join SSPโs initiative and enhance their knowledge on business.
Sangeetaโs next plan is to brand her papad and buy a drying machine to increase the production. She believes women can grow if they support each other and never give up.”My journey began with a โน5,000 loan and a sewing machine. Today, I run five small businesses. A woman becomes stronger when she refuses to give up.”
