In Kamalanagar Block of Bidar district, Karnataka, Sunita Metre is transforming lives in Holsamudraโturning everyday challenges into opportunities for women through sustainable farming, dairy, and goat-rearing initiatives.
With hands-on training in entrepreneurship and self-employment through the Karnataka State Rural Livelihood Promotion Society (KSRLPS), Bengaluru, and the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), Sunita not only improves farm productivity but also nurtures confidence, decision-making, and leadership among local women. Today, more than 150 women farmers follow the climate-resilient farming techniques she promotes, while 50 families benefit from improved nutrition and food security.
Sunitaโs initiatives go beyond farming. Through SHG-led savings, access to microfinance, and promotion of handicrafts, she has inspired many women to start their own enterprisesโturning aspirations into income and independence. She also enabled 35 women farmers to access training on fruit and mushroom cultivation through the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and the Horticulture Department in Bidar. Her efforts help conserve natural resources, improve livelihoods, and strengthen the social fabric of the community.
Her dedication and impact have been recognized through awards such as Best Main Book Keeper (Zilla Panchayat, 2024) and Best Agricultural Practitioner (Rangmanch Krishi Vigyan Kendra, 2019).
Sunita envisions a future where women-led rural enterprises drive economic stability and community resilienceโproving that empowered women truly transform villages.
