Saroja Garad’s WCRF Journey
This collective effort reflects her commitment to sustainable farming and community development.
Saroja Garad is a dedicated community member of Malavati village in Latur District, Maharashtra. She always wanted to learn more about chemical free-farming. A turning point arrived in 2023 when Saroja discovered Swayam Shikshan Prayog – SSP ‘s work on sustainable agriculture and women empowerment. Inspired, she enrolled in their Women-led Climate Resilient Farming Model (WCRF), supported by CSR initiatives of @ADM.
After attending the training from the WCRF model, she gained comprehensive knowledge on producing bio-pesticides and organic fertilizers using natural resources available on her farm. Applying these newly acquired techniques, she began preparing them from natural materials. This not only enhanced the sustainability and effectiveness of her farming practices but also contributed to improved crop yields and reduced costs.
Armed with new knowledge, Saroja transformed her 3-acre land into a chemical free heaven, practicing intercropping and creating her own organic fertilisers. This shift not only yielded financial independence, but also Saroja’s income saw around 67% increase after adopting WCRF methods, rising from approximately Rs. 1.5 lakhs to Rs. 2.5 lakhs per harvest season.
Saroja’s influence extended beyond her farm. She became a champion for chemical free farming, mentoring 15 women to adopt the WCRF model. Her collaboration with the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) department to support 60 farmers further solidified her leadership role. Saroja’s journey exemplifies the power of knowledge, determination, and community engagement in driving positive change.
In addition to implementing these practices on her own farm, she extended her newfound expertise to her community by training other women farmers from her village. Through these training sessions, she has empowered local women with the skills to adopt WCRF methods and improve their agricultural productivity. This collective effort reflects her commitment to sustainable farming and community development.
