“As a Sarpanch I will work for the women to get their demands fulfilled and make sure that benefits of the government schemes reach them on time.”
Ms. Saroja Bhaskar Suryavanshi, the first woman sarpanch of Nagarsoga village in Latur district of Maharashtra. Just within two months of being elected as a Sarpanch, she has reached out to as many villagers as possible to provide relief during the crises. Starting with awareness campaigns about safety & precautions regarding COVID, she organised cleanliness drives in the village, making sure that the village gets disinfected every week on time.
She has played a key role providing support to the poor and needy people, distributed masks & sanitizers to 500 villagers. Making health centres more accessible to people, through her personal counselling she made sure the individuals are able to reach the hospitals for testing & check up on time.
She has helped 400 people to get vaccinated, & the count still continues. Patients who are tested positive, are timely diagnosed & treated, she has encouraged people & supported home or farm quarantine facilities. Understanding the need for jobs she has helped 40 people receive jobs through MGNREGA for road construction in the village & further plans to provide support to more people.
“As a Sarpanch I will work for the women to get their demands fulfilled & make sure that benefits of the government schemes reach them on time.” She now plans to provide livelihood opportunities to women through Self Help Groups so they can also earn regular income to sustain their family.
Saroja Tai says “villagers have chosen me & it’s my duty to serve them. I will do my best to help my villagers & make sure the best possible relief reaches them.”
