Sanjeevani Mahor, Pimpaldari village in Aurangabad district in Maharashtra

Sanjeevani Mahor tells us a simple story of transformation and change, from adversity to hope and self-reliance. She is a resident of Pimpaldari village in Aurangabad district in Maharashtra which is a severely drought prone area with very scanty rainfall and few livelihood options. As a result the women of this village regularly went to work in other’s farms doing traditional farming using chemicals.

She has been a member of the village self-help group (SHG) since last 10 years, but the moment of change happened two years ago, when she was introduced to Swayam Shikshan Prayog (SSP). SSP initiated her to one-acre farming and alternative business opportunities.

After training, Sanjeevani experimented by planting 8 different vegetables in the small open space in front of her house before cultivating on her farm. Now she not only feeds her family but also earns good money selling these vegetables. Shifting to chemical free vegetables, has improved the health of her family members and reduced medical expenses. Sanjeevani’s garden has inspired ten other village women to grow vegetables in similar manner.

Under SSP’s guidance and training, Sanjeevani planted five vermi compost beds in the village and formed a producer group with 20 women farmers. They now sell organic manure, vermi wash and compost to get more income. Earlier her income was Rs. 3000/- but after connecting with SSP and shifting to sustainable agriculture, her income has doubled to Rs. 6000/- by selling vegetables and non-agri products.

Today she is a farmer, has her own small business and a distinct identity in the village. She has emerged as a leader promoting SSP’s programs, reaching out and training other women about organic farming, vermicomposting and natural fertilizers.

Apart from this she is very much involved in Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) events facilitated by SSP that focus on personal hygiene, nutrition, pregnancy and infant care etc.

In her own words, “I am very thankful to SSP for giving me the opportunity to be part of the organisation and will use my experience and the opportunity to help other needy women in the village”.
