Pinki Kumari, Nalanda Bihar

Pinki unlocks her fortune during COVID-19 lockdown

All was well until February 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic started in March 2020, life has changed for all including Pinki Kumari from Rudda village, Parwalpur block of Nalanda in Bihar.

Pinki’s husband Bikram came home, leaving Delhi’s wages and had a month’s worth of money, but the money was spent for food for the family. She didn’t have an idea of what to do to feed her family members.

Pinky received the dry food kit including needy grocery items and hygiene products from Swayam Shikshan Prayog. She came forward & supported the SSP team as one of the Sakhi Task Force members to distribute food packets to 58 disabled & widowed families. Again, after a few days, her family did not have anything to eat.

Pinki discussed her problems with other Sakhi task force members and SSP team. Then the path starts. From the adjacent house, she asked for a sewing machine and, with the help of Super Sakhi Poonam Devi, she could receive an order to sew 8000 masks from the Panchayat and made a profit of three rupees per mask and earned INR 18,000 (USD 246). This brought her much fame and she again received several orders for masks making from Bihar Rural Livelihoods Project (BRLP), locally known as JEEViKA with the objective of social & economic empowerment of the rural poor.

From this earnings she made from selling masks, she bought a sewing machine and started sewing mattresses for people to sleep on. Today she has a permanent income of approximately INR 3000 (USD 41) per month.
