Reviving Memories with Chemical-Free Harvests
With winters around the corner, who doesn’t like the colourful carrots in their pantry or good bowl of gajar halwa made in desi ghee.
In Bavi village, our farmers are ensuring those memories stay alive with a bountiful, chemical-free harvest. Here a short testimonial of our women farmer, Jyoti Shinde from Bavi Village, Latur District, Maharashtra in her own words.
I cultivated carrots on 2 acres of land. A total of ₹60,000 was spent on activities such as planting, sowing, plowing, and irrigation for the carrots. As a member of the FPO, Prema Gopalan Producer Company, I received an interest-free loan of ₹10,000, which I used for carrot cultivation. The tractor received through the SBI Foundation project was used for carrot harvesting, which provided several benefits. The harvesting process lasted for 15 days, allowing us to sell the produce in weekly markets and earn better profits. We were able to take fresh carrots for sale every two days, which helped us secure a good price and increased our income.
During our farm training by Swayam Shikshan Prayog, we learned how to practice farming at a lower cost, which was also beneficial. If we had rented a tractor from elsewhere, we would have had to return it within 3 to 4 days, limiting our ability to maximize earnings. And the expenses would have been higher as well. Being members of the FPO, we were able to get this low-cost tractor for harvesting.
The total expenditure for 2 acres was ₹60,000, and the net profit from the yield amounted to ₹2,80,000.
