Chitralekha Devi, Patna, Bihar

Every woman must fulfill her dreams

Married off at a young age, Chitralekha did not give up on her dreams. Passionate about creating value, she knew she wanted to make a difference in her community & also better her own life. Education, she felt, was the first step. Her husband encouraged her & with his support, she completed her schooling. She joined a local SHG in her village & soon her active facilitative style & problem-solving skills saw her spearheading many campaigns. Recognizing her husband’s income alone will not help them overcome their tough circumstances, She accessed the Community Resilience Funds provided by SSP in partnership with Bihar water Development Society & became the proud owner of the only xerox & printer machine in her village.

Timely repaying the money & inspiring many others with her discipline & commitment. Inspired to acquire new skills she learned computers & was appointed as the Customer Service Point.

Chitralekha’s feisty nature has won her many admirers. Today she manages not only the books of her SHG, but also the Bookkeeper for the cluster level organizations. She and her husband are equal contributors in their family, earning nearly INR 15,000 to 20,000 per month (200-250 USD). Not willing to rest on her accolades, Chitralekha enrolled for an MBA, and is currently in the 2nd year of the course.

An entrepreneur, an active SHG leader, breadwinner, and supportive homemaker, Chitralekha exudes confidence and poise. For many in her community, she is a living testimony to the endless possibilities that open once you are determined to write your own destiny.
