A farmer and self taught entrepreneur who exemplifies the spirit of determination
Sunita Kumbhar, a farmer and self taught entrepreneur who exemplifies the spirit of determination. Sunita, a wife and mother of two, began crafting cement idols just six months ago, combining her artistic flair with innovative techniques. Using digital platforms like WhatsApp, Sunita has successfully marketed her creations. Beyond her artistry, she cultivates 15 acres of farmland, raising crops with modern agricultural methods. Sunita also manages her 4 cows, a buffalo, and 11 goats, integrating livestock rearing into her diversified livelihood.
Sunita’s transformation started with SSP’s training on Women Led Climate Resilient Farming (#WCRF). She adopted WCRF techniques, significantly boosting her Jowar yield from 200 to 900 kilograms annually. She implemented drip irrigation to conserve water and increase efficiency. To expand her work, SSP supported Sunita to leverage a ₹4 lakh bank loan and ₹5 lakh from a government livestock scheme.
Sunita’s success is just one of many in Kumbhari village. Home to 400 farmers, the community has embraced SSP’s approach to women-led transformation with:
-Economic Empowerment: 20 women established goat-rearing businesses, 40 started tailoring ventures, and several others in beauty parlors and cake-making.
-Sustainable Practices: Half the farmers now practice WCRF farming techniques
-Improved Water Access: Every household has piped water and private purifiers.
-Education: More girls now study up to the 12th standard, supported by community awareness programs.
SSP also formed Village Gram Sanghas to address women’s financial needs and Village Action Groups to tackle social issues and resource mobilization for agriculture, water, and livelihoods. While the community has made significant progress, challenges such as alcoholism and domestic violence persist.
