Shabana Sheikh, Latur, Maharashtra

When her determination did not leave any stone unturned

“When you are poor, ways to improve your condition are also scarce. No one was ever willing to give us loan”, says Shabana Sheikh from Selu in Latur. With a determination to get herself and her family out of this situation, Shabana did not leave any stone unturned. She looked for every opportunity that came her way. It was how she met Anjali, who was working with SSP, in an SHG meeting in Yakatpur.

Learning about the organisations and opportunities, Shabana soon started attending the agriculture and business trainings by SSP. She also became a leader in her village and formed a group of women to transfer the knowledge. Shabana founded the Shri Mahalaxmi group with 10 women and trained them on climate resilient agriculture and agri allied businesses. Through the groups, Shabana arranged loan for herself and members of the group . She set up a flour mill and a cloth shop and quietly earns INR 7,000/month.

“Today I am earning enough to send my children to good schools. I am happy that along with my life, I am also changing the lives of the women around me”, says Shabana.
